Tongue Releases
What are Tongue Releases?
A tongue-tie release, or frenectomy, is a quick and minimally invasive procedure that loosens the band of tissue (lingual frenulum) connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When this tissue is too tight or short—commonly referred to as a tongue-tie (ankyloglossia)—it can restrict tongue movement and cause difficulties with eating, speaking, or nursing. The procedure can be performed gently and precisely using laser technology, often with little to no discomfort.
When should you consider a Tongue Release?
You or your child might benefit from a tongue-tie release if you're experiencing signs such as difficulty nursing, speech challenges, limited tongue movement, or persistent oral discomfort. A thorough evaluation by Dr. Teel can determine if a frenectomy is appropriate. When done with laser technology, the treatment is fast, precise, and typically requires no sutures or extended recovery time.
Why choose a Tongue Release?
Tongue-tie can affect patients of all ages. In infants, it can interfere with breastfeeding, causing frustration for both baby and mother. In children, it may impact speech development, oral hygiene, and even orthodontic health. In adults, it can contribute to issues like speech difficulty, gum recession, and jaw tension. Releasing the tie improves mobility and function of the tongue, often leading to immediate and long-term benefits in comfort, speech, and quality of life.
