Deep Cleanings

What is a Deep Cleaning?

A deep cleaning is a more intensive dental procedure used to treat early to moderate gum disease (periodontitis). Unlike a regular cleaning, it goes below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth roots. This is done through a process called scaling and root planing, which smooths the roots to help gums reattach and reduce inflammation.

When should you schedule a Deep Cleaning?

Dr. Teel may recommend a deep cleaning if you show signs of gum disease—such as bleeding gums, deep pockets between the teeth and gums, or persistent bad breath. Unlike regular cleanings, deep cleanings are done as needed, not routinely, and may be followed by periodontal maintenance every 3–4 months instead of standard checkups.

Why do Deep Cleanings matter?

When plaque and tartar build up beneath the gums, it can lead to gum infections, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss if untreated. Deep cleaning helps stop the progression of gum disease and restores healthier gum tissue. It's a crucial step in managing periodontal health and preventing more advanced issues like surgery or tooth extraction.
