Cleanings

What is a Cleaning?

A regular dental cleaning, also called prophylaxis, is a preventive treatment where one of our dental hygienists removes plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth. It includes scaling above the gumline, polishing your teeth, and sometimes a fluoride treatment. This process supports your daily brushing and flossing by targeting buildup in hard-to-reach areas.

When should you schedule a Cleaning?

Most people should get a professional cleaning every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, excessive tartar buildup, or orthodontic appliances, Dr. Teel may recommend more frequent visits. Consistent cleanings are essential for maintaining both oral and overall health.

Why do Cleanings matter?

Even with great home care, plaque can harden into tartar over time—especially in spots your toothbrush can’t reach. Professional cleanings help prevent cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath by keeping your mouth free of harmful bacteria. They also allow our dental team to monitor changes in your oral health and catch issues early.
